Creative writing is basically any writing which goes beyond the boundaries of normal, everyday professional, scholarly, or technical writing, generally identified by a strong emphasis on character development, story telling, and an overall usage of poetic metaphors and allusions. Poetry has long been recognized as a key form of creative writing because of the visual effects that its versed devices and figurative elements have on the audience. Poets are able to take their works on several levels; the most common being the one-to-one correlation of the poet’s state of mind with that of his or her words. Many people feel that this level of interpretation is the most difficult, as words can be compared to abstract concepts. In addition to the visual and associative effects of the poet’s emotions, there are also the effects of their actions and reactions. This type of art is commonly referred to as "the work of the heart".

Creative writing is very broad and encompasses a wide array of written styles including technical writing, narrative non-fiction, short stories, poems, novels, and song lyrics. It is considered creative writing, when an artist applies their personal aesthetic sense, intelligence, imagination, and talent in creating a written piece of art, usually having given prior notice to their intended audience. Technical writing, on the other hand, is considered creative writing by most editors because it usually involves scientific or technological information, such as scientific journals, magazines, books, or other scientific or technological materials. The work of a writer with a technical background and artistic sensibilities is considered creative writing by many critics and writers.

One of the most important distinctions between creative writing and creative nonfiction is the medium. While there are many ways in which a writer of any given genre may write, most creative writing is done in a somewhat formalized manner. It is done in an environment, such as in a bookstore or literary agent’s office, or in an editing room, where the writer gives personal attention to each writing project. Most creative writing can be categorized into four key areas: fiction (novels, screenplays, short stories, articles), creative nonfiction (press releases, articles, short stories), and technical writing (books, magazines, websites). The field of creative nonfiction is much less defined than the other three, and it is widely considered a subset of all writing.
